Shun Kawakami:Snow Landscapes

We have a wonderful new writer Liam Anderson. Enjoy his first post.

Opening this Friday, 25th of September at Backwoods Gallery (25 Easey Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia) is the new solo show by the Japanese artist/designer Shun Kawakami. I had the chance to see his work before it opens. The show reflects the Japanese tradition of Yohaku, or the love of empty space.

The work is broken down into two cycles. They form a panorama when you view them collectively. This creates a barren landscape that is cold and hostile while retaining a deadly sense of serenity and beauty. The imaged landscapes were constructed from photographs originating from a rare snow shower that deposited 20cm of snow in Tokyo in 2012; it normally does not snow in Tokyo. Kawakami then stitched the individual trees to form these snowscapes. The paper and the wall scrolls were created in collaboration with Living National Treasure recipients who are Masters in their respective crafts.

I recommend this show to all those who like photography or appreciate excellent craftsmanship on hand made traditional Japanese paper.

You can see the clear Sumi ink brushed over the works in this photograph. It gives the work a sense of motion that may reflect the wind rustling the trees.

The small works shimmer with the the black floating in the gold-leaf background.

Stanislava Pinchuk (Miso): Surface To Air

She has done it again, Stanislava Pinchuk (Miso) new sellout exhibition 'Surface To Air' at Karen Woodbury Gallery (Level 1/167 Flinders Lane, Melbourne) is just beautiful. The very stunningly subtle pin holes on paper have a very poignant message.

"Surface To Air is a mapping of the Ukrainian civil war across landscape topographies & sonic scores. While a nod to the S.T.A missiles used in the conflict, the title also hints at the experience of war from a private perspective, coming up for air in resilience."

Go and see the show as it is even better in person. Enjoy the images…

Colour, Light & Silence: Anselm van Rood

Yesterday I visited Stephen Mclaughlan Gallery (Level 8, Room 8, Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston Street, Melbourne) to see Anselm van Rood's show Colour, Light & Silence (29 April- 16 May 2015). It is really refreshing to see some beautiful paintings, some from the artist*s studio, some portraits and some landscapes. Here are some photos from this wonderful show. Enjoy.

‘James Turrell: A Retrospective’ NGA Canberra

Happy New Year 2015! I have a few exciting posts coming up for 2015 and can't wait to share them with you. Expect more regular posting.

I was very lucky to have been able to go to Canberra recently to visit family and see some amazing exhibitions. Today I want to talk about James Turrell's show "James Turrell: A Retrospective" 13 December 2014 – 8 June 2015 at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), Canberra. This is a paid exhibition costing $20.39- $45.88. The more expensive premium tickets are for experiencing 'Perceptual cell', which I unfortunately didn't get to do because it was booked out when I was there. Also note that 'Within without' is part of the permanent collection and can be viewed for free, this work is best viewed at dawn or dusk to fully appreciate the lighting effects.

So what did I think? I really loved seeing & experiencing both his earlier works through to his more recent immersive works. I also loved seeing other visitors have a sense of curiosity and wonder about the work. I loved the show so much I plan on seeing it again when I go back up to work on a commission and I hope to be able to get a ticket to the 'Perceptual cell'. Premium tickets are selling out fast so if you plan on going to Canberra try and book the tickets now otherwise you might miss out.

As photos were not allowed in the exhibition, here are some images and a video provided by NGA.
