Doomsday Song by Guy Mathews

Presented by Backwoods until the 22nd of November 2015 at Gallery 5 (5 Easey St, Collingwood VIC 3066).

Installation Photo courtesy of Backwoods Gallery.

Guy Mathews  art combines dying art of signwriting and abstract expressionism with a good dose of the industrial design.  The result is an engaging painterly body of work that straddles different stylistic traditions called bricolage. Guy experiences as an antique dealer had granted him a keen eye for interesting and quirky artifacts. This has allowed Guy to gather antique signs that would be rejected traditional as a transient object and transform them into lovingly crafted tablets with industrial inspired finish.

Waldemar Kolbusz – ‘Rudiment’

Last week I visited the Flinders Lane Gallery (137 Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000). The exhibition 'Rudiment' (13 Oct – 7 Nov 2015) features large gestural paintings of contemporary artist Waldemar Kolbusz. I really liked the spontaneous patches of paint and colour. 'This expressionistic project is abstract yet altogether unambiguous.' – Kate Britton.

Rigg Design Prize 2015

We are happy to announce another new writer to Art and Artists Blog, Emilia Martinez. Enjoy.

Today I went to the NGV at Federaion Square (Ground, Federation Sqaure, Flinders St & Russell St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia). The exhibition I enjoyed the most was the Rigg Design Prize 2015 (18 Sep 15 – Feb 16) on level 3, showcasing work from seven furniture designers, Adam Goodrum (NSW), Brodie Neill (TAS), Daniel Emma (SA), Kate Rohde (VIC), Khai Liew (SA), Korban/Flaubert (NSW) and Koskela (NSW) in collaboration with the weavers of Elcho Island Arts (NT).

"Recognising excellence in contemporary Australian design, the Rigg Design Prize is the highest accolade for object and furniture design in Australia." – NGV

Anna Pappas Gallery: Simon MacEwan & Karyn Taylor

Recently I visited Anna Pappas Gallery (2-4 Carlton Street, Prahran, VIC, 3181). There are two wonderful artists showing; Simon MacEwan's 'The Floating World' and Kᾱryn Taylor's 'Immaterial Alchemy', both showing from 3 September 2015 to 3 October 2015.

'The Floating World' has wonderfully beautiful drawings created by a drawing machine which is also part of the exhibtion. 'Immaterial Alchemy' is a show which plays with light. The perspex artworks look like they are iluminated from within with lights, however it is actually the fluorescent coloured perspex inside creating this illusion.

Enjoy the images.

Stanislava Pinchuk (Miso): Surface To Air

She has done it again, Stanislava Pinchuk (Miso) new sellout exhibition 'Surface To Air' at Karen Woodbury Gallery (Level 1/167 Flinders Lane, Melbourne) is just beautiful. The very stunningly subtle pin holes on paper have a very poignant message.

"Surface To Air is a mapping of the Ukrainian civil war across landscape topographies & sonic scores. While a nod to the S.T.A missiles used in the conflict, the title also hints at the experience of war from a private perspective, coming up for air in resilience."

Go and see the show as it is even better in person. Enjoy the images…
