Melbourne Art Fair 2012

If you are a collector or art lover or even an artist you should and must go visit the Melbourne Art Fair.  This year there is more than 900 artists that are represented by over 80 leading national and international galleries. Vastly different to the Sydney Biennale (which I will blog about) this is a conference style setup, directed mostly to collectors and museums looking to collect, there is a large range of collectible art. This show can also show you who the new up and coming artist are. Buy tickets here (Adult AU $30,Concession AU $22)

4 shows to see this Weekend

So I have been a little slack with blogging (bad cold + working on my masters).  This will hopefully make up for it. I have been going to quite a few shows and these are my favourites…

1. Frames of Reference: 16th June – 8th July 2012
Langford 120 is a beautiful gallery and Frames of Reference is a beautifully curated show by Dr. Wilma Tabacco. The works in the show are vibrant and have collector appeal, reasonably priced works that I would love to own. (photo via Langford 120 webpage)

2. Outline:  8th June – 29th June 2012 (I know last  day is Friday but this is a good show)

Carly Grace created this beautiful exhibition, playing with the illusion of space by drawing on the windows of the Platform. These photos don't do this show justice so you should see this in person.

William Kentridge: Five Themes Review

William Kentridge: Five themes exhibition is an award-winning show. It is most toured contemporary exhibition ever; and Melbourne is its ninth and final stop.

Artist and film maker William Kentridge is best known for his charcoal animations which depict the political unrest in South Africa. Enter the magical dream like world of Kentridge’s genius mind by seeing the exhibition and experience the best of what he is famous for.

Whether you’re a fan of animation, film, theatre or art, this amazing exhibition will entertain you for hours. The exhibition is separated into 5 different themes: Ubu and the Procession, Soho and Felix, Artist in the Studio, The Magic Flute and The Nose. As it is a varied collection of films, drawing, prints and sculptures, you will be entranced by the playful nature of some of his work and then be moved to tears by his more emotionally poignant films.

The exhibition really deserves multiple visits as one visit is simply not enough, however if you are forced only to see three things in the whole show, you must experience the immersive and humorous projection room of the Artist in Studio inspired by Georges Méliès. It is simply a magical theatre model, with the mechanical puppets and projections as part of The Magic Flute. Last but certainly not least, the intriguing anamorphic film, What Will Come (Has Already Come).

This is the must see show of the year.

William Kentridge Media Conference at Acmi

The William Kentridge exhibition is an amazing show, and below is a video of the media conference at Acmi. It's a very long video but it is great for if you want some insight on Kentrigde's work. Kentridge is very eloquent.

Briony Barr: Art Experiment #1

On the 18th and 19th of February a group of people came together for Briony Barr's Art Experiment. Two days of fun, combining Art with Science in the beautiful South Melbourne Commons. It was really fun.

So with some tools, rules, a floor with some boundries and lots of explaining we created our own complex systems using people and tape.

It was like playing a game, goals, scores and prizes.

Above is an image of Elana person to reach the goal.

Keeping score, who whichever colour reached the goal more got paid more, how much? No idea. It really just made thing more interesting, however after a while I gave up on making the goal and tried to make the patterns look nice.

The pay packet above.

Above is a science that we learnt about complex systems, explained by Dr. Andrew Melatos of The University of Melbourne's Astrophysics Group.

Extra bits of fun and making of friends above.

Lots of group discussions and directions were made.

Than there was the undo-ing of all the tap. This is what happened…

The unplaned ball game…

The amazing food that was provided…
